Cathy Heaton is a mostly self-taught photographer. In 2005 Cathy enrolled in photographic courses to enhance her true talent and passion for photography. When one of her lecturers exclaimed that “she didn’t need teaching”, Cathy realised that she was well on her way to becoming a successful photographer!
Cathy holds certificates in digital photography and studio lighting. Using only the best lighting equipment and techniques allows Cathy to produce the stunning images she does over and over again.
Besides her photography keeping her extremely busy, Cathy is also one of JHB’s top bridal make-up artists. Cathy completed her Diploma in Fashion and Photographic Make-up in October 2002.
Cathy has also worked on SABC’S The Wedding Show, 7de Laan, 3Talk, commercials and she has also worked for Weigh Less, Essentials, Your Pregnancy, Bounty Pregnancy Guide and BabyCare Guides and Get It magazines and the elegant Bride’s Diary (boasting make-up for the 2007 & 2008 covers). Cathy has also written articles for the Oakfield Farm Bridal Library magazine for two years running and has been quoted by The Wedding Collection and Fair Lady Bride. Cathy’s client base includes Woolworths, Glomail, Nashua, Bounty, AspenPharmacare, Onyx Interiors and many more. Cathy won the Silver Award for best bridal make-up artist in the SABIA awards in 2009.
One of Cathy’s photos was selected by Baby City for one of their ad campaigns and she came 2nd in a National Portrait Competition in the Pix South African Photography Journal. Cathy has had finalists in the Your Baby Cover Baby Competition for 4 years running. Get It magazine published a double-page spread on this dynamic mom, make-up artist and photographer in May 2006. Her images have adorned the cover of the Bounty Pregnancy and Babycare Guides bi-annually for 5 years. In 2009 Pix Magazine had a one page article on how to photograph children accompanied by Cathy Heaton’s images and a 6 page article on Boudoir Photography exclusively accompanied by Cathy Heaton images.
In 2013 she published her first book, Our Incredible Journey, a pregnancy and baby journal with her photography published by Random House Struik. Making Cathy the only baby photographer to be published in South Africa! Our Incredible Journey has become a best seller, having sold over 10 000 copies. Cathy is currently working on her 2nd and 3rd books.
Cathy married Mark in March 2002 and became a mom when she adopted Joe Buddy in 2004. Thirteen months later she gave birth to Christian Alexander. Cathy works from her two studios in Fourways, JHB. Her favourite things in her life are her boys, husband, family, being creative and achieving her goals – and she has many!
